Ways to troubleshoot an analog Fax line
Is the fax machine failing to send a fax?
- Check the number you are dialing is a correct fax line.
- You must dial 9+1 before the number
- Example: 9+1 435-797-7236
- International faxing/calling
- Test sending a fax to a known good fax line.
- Call the destination number with a regular phone or mobile phone. Does the fax machine answer (listen for the shrill tones and beeps of dial modems from days gone by)?
Is the fax machine unable to receive a fax?
- Call the receiving fax line from a regular campus line. Take note of the the fax machine's response.
- Call the fax line from a mobile phone or an off-campus line. Take note of the response.
- If the fax machine does not answer, check the cables are secure.
- If the fax machine does answer, but the fax transmission does not complete, check the fax machine reports. Most fax machines generate a log of failed transmissions that may give an indication of the problem, such as poor line quality.
Additional troubleshooting options
- If you have another analog device, such as a regular analog telephone or another fax machine, plug into the fax line and see if there are issues.
- If there is another available and active analog jack nearby, you can plug your fax machine into it. This can help diagnose if the machine or the line has issues.
