What is an Email Alias?
- An email alias is another email address that points to a primary or institutional mailbox
- The primary or institutional mailbox at USU has an address of A#@usu.edu
- Email aliases are often used to replace long or difficult-to-remember email addresses
- Email sent to an alias is delivered to the same mailbox as the primary email address
- It is not a new mailbox, it is not an additional mailbox, nor does it replace the primary mailbox
What is the Standard Alias Naming Convention?
The standard convention is: first.last@usu.edu. First names may be abbreviated or set to represent a preferred first name.
Examples:
- Katherine may be Kate
- Richard may be Rick, Ric, or Dick
- Robert may be Rob or Bob
You must set a preferred name in Banner before an alias with your preferred name is available to request on the alias request form.
A Non-Standard Alias is:
- Any alias that is not a known abbreviation or nickname for the given first name or is not listed as a "preferred" name within Banner
- A last name that does not match the record in Banner
- If your last name has legally changed, please see How to Officially Change your Last Name at USU
How may I request an alias?
To request an email alias, submit the Email Alias Request form.
Email aliases are available to USU students and employees, but are the property of USU. See USU Email policy 557.
