Network: Register Android Devices Version 10 and later (Disable Mac Randomization)

6765 views

Use these instructions when your USU-guest connection asks you register your device each time you connect with your Android device running Android 10.0 and later.

Avoid this issue completely by connecting to Eduroam instead and enjoy enhanced security and connection benefits! Eduroam users only register their device once every 5 years!

About This Issue

To communicate with a Wi-Fi network, a device must identify itself to the network using a unique network address called a media access control (MAC) address. For privacy reasons, your android devices can periodically change the MAC address it uses with each Wi-Fi network. At Utah State University, our USU-guest network security is dependent on a unchanging MAC address to authorize access to the USU Network.

Registering a Device On Android 10.0 and Later

First you must disable private MAC addresses (If Enabled)

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Network & Internet.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the gear icon next to the USU-guest wifi address
  5. Tap advanced
  6. Tap privacy
  7. Tap use device MAC
  8. Add the device MAC (the MAC listed under network details) to the USU-guest network at https://netreg.usu.edu
