What is happening to the BLUEZONE wireless network after August 1, 2023?
- After August 1, two wireless networks will be available:
- USU-guest renamed from bluezone, new device setup & guest use)
- Eduroam (USU's secure, roaming network for students, faculty, and staff)
How can I connect to the USU network?
- These two wireless networks are available:
- USU-guest: New devices that connect to USU-guest will be automatically directed to guest.usu.edu for further instruction. Connect to USU-guest to do any of the following:
- Set up access to Eduroam for the first time. Eduroam is USU's secure network for employees and students.
- Connect for one day as a guest.
- Connect wireless devices that are unable to use Eduroam by registering the device's MAC address at netreg.usu.edu.
- Eduroam: After a device is set up to use Eduroam (onboard via USU-guest), connect to this network for a more secure connection.
- USU-guest: New devices that connect to USU-guest will be automatically directed to guest.usu.edu for further instruction. Connect to USU-guest to do any of the following:
How can I register wireless devices that cannot use Eduroam?
- Wireless devices that cannot use Eduroam can be registered using either netreg.usu.edu or openipam.usu.edu with their MAC address. Once registered, these devices can then connect to the USU-guest network without any restrictions.
What if my device does not have a web browser?
- If your device does not have a web browser, you may register its MAC address from another device using either netreg.usu.edu or openipam.usu.edu. Once registered, these devices can then connect to the USU-guest network without any restrictions.
What is the difference between netreg.usu.edu and openipam.usu.edu?
- netreg.usu.edu is a tool for individuals to manage the registrations of their individual devices to connect to USU’s wired network, or to connect to USU-guest without requiring daily registration, if the device cannot support Eduroam. If a device is setup to use Eduroam, its MAC address does NOT need to be registered.
- openipam.usu.edu is a more technical tool used to register or renew devices by technical support staff who need to manage registrations and security groups for departments or units in bulk. If a device is setup to use Eduroam, its MAC address does NOT need to be registered.
What will happen to wireless devices currently registered to use BLUEZONE?
- Once connected to USU-guest they will continue to function as before. However, if the device supports Eduroam, visit guest.usu.edu and set the device up to use Eduroam instead. MAC address registration is not necessary to use Eduroam.
Is there any change to the availability of openipam.usu.edu?
- No, openipam.usu.edu will continue to be available as before, providing services where MAC address registration or changes to security groups are necessary.
